THE 7th SUMMER WATERMELON 30th AUGUST 2009 |
The Summer Watermelon is often the hardest of the club's four seasonal tournaments to stage, with many members away on holiday, or at the Edinburgh Festival. Also there is the question of other park users legitimately obstructing the course, either by sunbathing or playing other games. Evening dates have sometimes been the solution, but even these have been difficult to arrange. As Summer soothed its way through the last days of August this year, the club only just made it, but as such short notice was given, it is no wonder that attendance was minimal. In fact just two players arrived for the match, both male, so no Ladies Watermleon was awarded. The sky was cloudy and there was a fair bit of wind, hence the relative emptiness of the lawn and so the game was played at a good pace. The course went back to the original configuration, both players using aerobies. After the match, the players were joined by Charlotte H and we repaired to the Lansdowne pub on gloucester avenue - the location of the club's inaugural post match drink. Outside, enjoying the weather, was a group of boules players. Let's hope we have such luck with the weather in November for the Autumn Aubergine!
